Eco-Tourism
If you are looking for an Eco-Friendly vacation, the properties listed below are located in the natural setting in which Florida is meant to be experienced.
Ecotourism is about connecting conservation, communities and sustainable travel. Basically what this means is, traveling to a destination to enjoy what Mother Nature created. It is one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry. Northwest Florida, according to Precious Heritage, a nature conservancy survey of biodiversity in the US, is one of the six most important places for diverse and rare species in the country. From an environmental standpoint, the Panhandle is like no other part of the state; the assemblage of plants and animals here occurs nowhere else on earth.

Since there are few places that compare to the richness in wildlife that we offer in our small communities, our area is a must-see. Gulf County, which includes Cape San Blas and Indian Pass, is as close to being "Old Florida" as any of the state's 67 counties in both attitude and attributes. Mother Nature was kind to this Panhandle coastal county that stretches along the Gulf of Mexico. With hardly any chain hotels or restaurants and with no malls or outlet shopping centers, this really seems to be the place to forget life's hustle and bustle.
With so much of the area relatively undeveloped with its great location, Gulf County is a great place for viewing wildlife. White-tailed deer, raccoons and Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins are common sights. Sea turtles nest on the beach. View shorebirds on the beach, wading birds in the salt marsh, raptors in the air above the water and songbirds in the pinelands.
If you enjoy Bird Watching, Gulf County is home to many of your favorites and more. Bird sanctuaries are located on Cape San Blas and in Port St. Joe. There are hiking trails throughout the county; some in parks and some simply worn by the adventuresome. Shelling or simply observing life along the beaches is another pastime.
If you enjoy more of the outdoor adventure, you will be drawn to the water. Activities that most visitors enjoy include kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting, bird watching, boating, riding horses on the beach and building sandcastles. This area is a great place to capture amazing photography.
The beaches are some of the most pristine in the entire world. Located in this natural setting, there are high dunes covered by sea oats. There is clean, white sand that makes a "crunch" sound almost like snow when you try to form either material into a ball. The clear, shallow water of the St. Joseph Bay reveals scallops, starfish and sand dollars.
A portion of Gulf County is located in the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. Encompassing nearly 200,000 acres, it is the largest reserve in the country; and it is the natural nursery for many protected, unique and even rare species of fauna, fish, mammals and fowl. A portion of the coastline is also protected with its designation as the St. Joseph Bay Buffer Preserve. Add to that several pristine state and local parks and you have all of the ingredients of a "well preserved" region.
